Holy Spirit Novena

Why are we praying this Novena as a parish?

A novena is 9 days of prayers that Christians pray leading up to a feast day, imploring extra graces from God. We get this tradition from the first novena, which was the 9 days between the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost that the apostles went to the Upper Room and prayed.

On Friday, May 31, our parish will begin a Novena to the Holy Spirit, for the intention that our new parish would be a parish of missionary disciples. We’ll say each brief novena prayer at the end of daily and Sunday Masses leading up to Sunday, June 9, which is the Feast of Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit came down upon the Disciples and empowered them to go make disciples.

Learn More About the Holy Spirit Novena

The Pentecost novena is really THE original novena. In the first chapter of the book of Acts, we see the disciples waiting in unity and prayer for the Holy Spirit for nine days after Jesus’ ascension to heaven.

Jesus told them “not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, ‘You heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit… You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses.'” — Acts 1:4, 8

Jesus asked them to pray constantly in the upper room until the descent of the Holy Spirit.

“They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” — Acts 1:14

And on the ninth day after they began to pray for the Holy Spirit to come, they received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” — Acts 2:1-4

Immediately, the Disciples went out and began to proclaim that Jesus is Lord to the crowds who had gathered for the Jewish feast. They miraculously spoke a variety of languages so that all who heard them could understand their message.

Peter said, ” And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.”

Now when they heard this [the crowds] were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 2: 21, 23-24, 37-38

We pray for this same Spirit to come upon each of us and transform us from the inside out, so that we might become empowered to live and proclaim the love of Jesus Christ to all that we meet.
