Mass as Heaven on Earth – Week Five Homily

The Moment of Decision-Making

Homily by Fr. Marcellinus Onyejekwe, CMF.

21st Sunday, Ordinary Time, Year B.

Readings: Joshua 24:1-2, 15-18; Ephesians 5:21-32; John 6:60-69

Each day of our life, we are faced with the challenges of decision-making, based on the different circumstances we go through. Some decisions are easy to make, some are tough. The readings of today, especially the first reading and the Gospel, talk about decision-making, not merely on the physical but spiritual level.

For the past five Sundays we have been reading and reflecting on chapter 6 of the gospel according John, where Jesus speaks about the Bread of Life. Jesus identified himself with this Bread, came down from heaven. The 1st Sunday was the Sunday of miracle. Jesus multiplied the five loaves and two fish to feed the crowd. It was the moment of glory, the time of joy based on the physical appearance. They wanted to crown Jesus King so that he would continue to do such miracles for them and give them bread to eat free of charge. Continue reading “Mass as Heaven on Earth – Week Five Homily”

TO:  Ministry Leaders, Staff, Parish and Finance Council Members, Leadership Team at Saint Thomas More

FROM:  Becca Arend, Pastoral Associate of Ministries, Engagement, and Evangelization

DATE: September 1, 2018

SUBJECT: Financial Requests from Saint Thomas More Ministries

One of my new duties at the parish is coordinating ministries. To this end, we are establishing a systematic procedure for requesting cheques from the parish.

Here are the new procedures surrounding financial requests:

  1. When a cheque is needed, please choose one person to make the request. Duplicate requests are not allowed. In most situations, for the sake of simplicity, only the leader of the ministry or a designated treasurer should make the request. STM Office staff members (Catherine or substitutes) have been instructed not to issue any cheque without a written request.
  2. Fill in the Cheque Requisition form. The form can be downloaded from the top of this page OR can be picked up in the parish office. This form ensures that Catherine has all the information she needs in order to issue the cheque.  The signed form can be delivered to Catherine in the parish office.
  3. Account Numbers: In order to fully complete the Cheque Requisition, you will need to know your applicable account number(s). You can request the account number(s) that apply to your ministry from Catherine via a written email request.
  4. Reports: Ministry reports should be requested in writing (via email) to Catherine.

Please share this with all members of your ministry.

Mass as Heaven on Earth – Week Four Homily

Jesus is our Bread of Life (Liturgy of the Eucharist)

For the past few weeks, we have been doing a homily series on Mass as Heaven on Earth. I will give a little recap for the interest of our visitors or parishioners who have not been to Mass lately. In weeks 1, 2 & 3, we explained that at each Mass, God comes to meet us where we are here on earth. The Lord Jesus is present in the minsters – the priest, altar servers, readers, music …, in the people and in his Word. Most especially He is present under the Eucharistic species – The Bread and Wine. The CCC 1405 says, “There is no surer pledge or dearer sign of this great hope in heaven than the Eucharist. Hence, this week we want to focus on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Continue reading “Mass as Heaven on Earth – Week Four Homily”

Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week Three Homily

Week 3 Homily: “Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me” (John 6:45).

Today we are on week 3 of our homily Series – “Mass is Heaven on Earth. Why are we doing this series on the Mass? Because  we’ve been reading the Gospel of John 6 where Jesus presents the discourse on Himself as the Bread of Life. He gives us himself in the form of Bread and Wine at Mass which is the greatest prayer we have as Catholics. It is the center and summit of our Christian faith. We would like all of our parishioners to appreciate the mystery we celebrate and receive all the graces that comes with encountering God at Mass. Continue reading “Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week Three Homily”

Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week Two Homily

The Mass….we all serve together

In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of how once Jesus fed the five thousand with the loaves and the fishes, all the crowds gathered around him. They are hungry for more of the bread that he gave them yesterday, and they want to be near Him. They ask, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Then Jesus tells the crowds Continue reading “Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week Two Homily”

Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week One Homily

What makes Mass so special? Mass isn’t just something we come to on weekends—it should be the center of our entire lives. Why? Because Mass isn’t just some nice prayers. It’s the place where we encounter God, face-to-face. Mass is worth risking our lives for.

There’s an American priest who lived after World War II named Fr. Walter Ciszek Continue reading “Mass as Heaven on Earth — Week One Homily”

The Mass…..Heaven on Earth

Did you know that the Mass is Heaven on earth?
Did you know that Jesus is present to you in different ways at
In the Gospel reading today Jesus goes up the mountain and there He sits
with His disciples. As we begin our five week series on the Mass, we will
first look at ways that Jesus is present to us in the Mass. I read a wonderful description on the Mass as it relates to Continue reading “SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME”

Dear Parishioners,
We would like to begin a Homily Series to enable us reflect thematically on the Word of God, the teachings of the
Church and other topics that will enhance the realization of our pastoral vision and goals, namely – personal
experience of God’s love, parish renewal, faith formation, service in community and fulfilling our primary mission of
going out to make disciples. The theme for the next five weeks is, “The Mass: Heaven on Earth.” Continue reading “HOMILY SERIES – MASS AS HEAVEN ON EARTH”
